Abstract
Based on the premise that physical activity among South Korean adolescents decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study empirically explored whether adolescent obesity rates increased during this period. To achieve this objective, the study utilized public data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey, which is maintained as official national statistics by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. The six-year period from 2018 to 2023 was divided into three phases: pre-pandemic (2018-2019), during the pandemic (2020-2021), and post-pandemic (2022-2023), and BMI survey data from a total of 314,521 middle and high school students of both genders were analyzed. The following conclusions were drawn from the interpretation and discussion of the analytical results. First, obesity rates among South Korean adolescents increased during the COVID-19 pandemic period (2020-2021). Second, the patterns of obesity rate changes across different time periods varied according to gender, school level, and urban classification. Third, statistically significant mean differences were found among all subcategory levels of gender, school level, and urban classification. This study suggests that societal changes can be a major factor in the reduction of physical activity among adolescents and the consequent increase in obesity rates.
