Abstract

This study investigates the psychometric limitations and educational implications in the assessment and support of students with Borderline Intellectual Functioning(BIF). BIF is typically defined as an IQ range between 70 and 85, representing individuals who do not meet diagnostic criteria for intellectual disability yet encounter considerable difficulties in academic and social adjustment. Despite its frequent use, IQ testing is subject to measurement constraints such as floor and ceiling effects, which may result in the underestimation or overestimation of students’ abilities. This paper systematically reviews these issues and synthesizes insights from psychometric research, special education, and educational psychology. Practical cases from educational settings are also examined to highlight the challenges and opportunities in supporting BIF students. The findings underscore the necessity for diagnostic caution, culturally responsive assessment, and tailored intervention strategies. Ultimately, this study contributes to ensuring equitable recognition and support for BIF students in diverse educational contexts.
