Abstract

[Purpose] This study aimed to deeply explore teachers' experiences providing Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) support for students with visual impairment in inclusive education settings and to analyze the educational implications of these activities. [Method] To this end, a qualitative in-depth inquiry was conducted into educational activity cases involving teachers who support inclusive education at an A-specialized visual impairment resource center. [Results] Firstly, teachers reported facing significant structural limitations, largely due to environmental and physical constraints, in delivering ECC to visually impaired students within inclusive education settings. Secondly, despite these challenges, teachers provided instruction in areas such as mobility, Braille, assistive technology, and adapted physical education. While intensive content could be delivered through summer ECC programs, the inability to integrate these into the regular curriculum hindered the maintenance of learning continuity. Thirdly, teachers identified negative emotional states among visually impaired students in inclusive settings. Although they prepared and systematically delivered lessons on emotional support, interpersonal skills, and disability acceptance, they acknowledged that the summer ECC support alone was insufficient to meet the needs of these students within the broader inclusive environment. Lastly, teachers deeply recognized the core value of ECC in fostering students' self-determined lives and enhancing their social competencies, there by emphasizing the necessity of sustained and systematic ECC support. [Conclusion] This study indicates that ECC support systems for visually impaired students in inclusive education mitigated educational gaps through the practical instructional efforts of field teachers. However, while affirming the rationale of inclusive education, the findings revealed a disconnect between legal mandates and the reality of practice, highlighting the urgent need for fundamental structural improvements to adequately support the unique needs of visually impaired students.
