도덕적 자동항법장치와 파일럿: 그린(J. Greene) 이중과정이론의 규범적 함의

도덕적 판단이 이성과 추론의 전유물이라고 간주하는 합리주의의 전통과는 다르게 많은 경우 일상적 판단은 신속하고 자동적인 감정과 직관에 의존한다. 이와 관련하여 최근 그린은 도덕적 판단이 직관과 추론의 이중과정을 통하여 도출된다는 이중과정이론을 제안하고 있다. 그는 직관과 추론을 ‘자동설정과 수동모드’에 비유하는데, 이는 직관의 효율성과 추론의 융통성이라는 각각의 특성을 나타내기 위한 비유이다. 그린에 의하면 효율적인 직관은 일상적인 문제의 처리에 적합하지만 유전이나 문화, 개인적 경험 등에 의하여 준비되지 않은 새로운 문제에 관하여는 편향성이나 오류를 드러낸다. 따라서 그린은 직관이 한계를 노정하는 도덕 문제에 관한 한 추론을 적용해야 한다고 주장한다. 그린의 이론은 현대 사회의 새로운 도덕적 문제를 해결하기 위한 규범적 지침을 제공한다는 점에서 실천적으로도 그리고 윤리학적으로도 중요한 의미 함축을 가진다. 그러나 이러한 함축을 현실화하기 위해서는 그의 규범적 주장을 뒷받침해 줄 충분한 과학적 증거와 추가적인 윤리학적 논의가 필요하다. 그린의 논의를 바탕으로 본고에서는 ‘자동항법장치와 파일럿’이라는 직관과 추론에 관한 새로운 비유를 제시한다. 이러한 비유를 통하여 현대사회의 도덕문제를 적절하게 다루기 위한 직관과 추론의 역할을 더욱 선명하게 드러내고자 한다.
Abstract
Unlike the tradition of rationalism which considered moral judgment originated from reason and reasoning, most cases of daily judgments depend on quick and automatic emotion and intuition. Recently, J. Greene suggested dual process theory in these regards that moral judgment is derived from a dual process of intuition and reasoning. He compared intuition and reasoning to ‘automatic settings and manual mode,’ that is, a metaphor to show respective characteristics of efficiency of intuition and flexibility of reasoning. According to J. Greene, though efficient intuition is appropriate to handle daily problems, it would show biases or errors in regard of new problems which would not be prepared for by heredity, culture, and personal experiences. Therefore, J. Greene insisted that reasoning should be applied for new moral issues which moral intuitions are not appropriate to deal with. The theory of J. Greene has important implications for moral practice and ethics in that it may provide normative guidelines for solving the contemporary new moral problems in global age. But both sufficient scientific evidences and additional ethical arguements to support his normative argument are required for realizing its implications. Based on J. Green's argument, this study suggests a new metaphor of ‘the moral autopilot and the moral pilot’ about the intuition and reasoning. Through this metaphor, the role of intuition and reasoning to properly deal with moral issues in modern society could be clearer.
