Abstract
The dual process theory based on cognitive (neuro)science reveals that we make moral judgments in two different ways. Automatic emotional responses, ‘automatic settings’, and controlled, conscious reasoning, ‘manual mode’. ‘automatic settings’ means intuitive judgment and is highly efficient, but not very flexible. ‘Manual mode’ means rational reasoning and is flexible, but not efficient. J. Greene uses fMRI to discover that characteristically deontological judgments are intuitive based on emotional response. These intuitions are shaped by genetics, cultural learning, and individual experience, and are sensitive to non-moral factors such as spatial proximity and the presence of personality. Thus, intuition with accidental causes of formation is a source of unjustified moral cognition. Ways to solve the problem of moral intuition are 1) maintaining intuition on the positive side of intuition; 2) refining intuition to correct intuition errors and prejudices; and 3) discarding of intuition not recognizing it as a moral data. Given the advantages of intuition and the fact that it an not ultimately be ruled out, it is necessary to increasingly sophisticate the approach to refine intuition. In particular, intuition that passes the equilibrium process at the scientific level can eliminate the elements of error and prejudice and obtain scientific evidence that supports it. Multiple equilibrium with additional scientific equilibrium in addition to normative and meta-ethics levels can be an alternative to complement moral intuition problems.
