Abstract
It is true that the dominant view in moral education only emphasizes the dark side of social media use, while the positive aspects, such as self-realization or contribution to social development through strategic use of social media, have been considerably ignored. In addition, it has unilaterally emphasized only safe, responsible and ethical use, omitting careful analysis of the impact of social media on students' moral development. Even in the existing social media literature, systematic analysis of the potential impact of social media on students' moral development has been very neglected. However, given the impact of social media on cognitive functions, empathy, identity, narcissism, and civic engagement, we can deduce to some extent the potential effects of social media on students’ moral development. In this paper, the potential influence of social media on students' moral development is explored through literature analysis. Here I looked at the impact of social media on a students’ moral development in terms of moral cognition, moral emotion, and moral behavior, which are three components of morality. Finally, I stressed the importance of digital citizenship as a new vocabulary of moral education, emphasizing the balance of between protection paradigm and promotion paradigm should be secured.
