이 글에서는 가장 비윤리적인 경영 사례로 비판을 받았던 Enron을 중심으로 1) Enron의 파산 과정을 개관하고, 2) 그 파산의 근본 원인은 고위 리더들의 비윤리적 리더십임을 밝혔다. 3) 이를 계기로 부상한 윤리적 리더십 이론을 살펴보고, 4) 윤리경영의 가장 중요한 요건인 고위 리더들의 윤리적 리더십 발달과 과제를 개인적 차원과 조직적 차원으로 나누어서 제안하였다. Enron 사례에서 얻을 수 있는 교훈은 고위 리더들이 윤리적으로 잘못된 계획과 관행들을 유지하는 한, 관련법을 제정하고 제도적 규제를 강화한다고 할지라도, 기업의 윤리적 실패를 근본적으로 예방하기엔 미흡하다는 점이다. 이에 기업경영을 책임지는 고위 리더일수록 윤리적 리더십을 발달시켜야 한다. 고위 리더는 도덕적인 사람으로서의 개인적 자질과 특성을 함양해야 하고, 항상 진실과 정직을 지향하도록 안내하는 도덕적 나침반도 개발해야 한다. 그리고 도덕적 관리자로서 기업의 공동 목적과 가치에 토대해서 윤리적인 조직문화와 풍토를 조성하고 조율할 수 있어야 한다.
Abstract
In this article, I analyze the bankruptcy process of Enron Corporation in U.S. known as the most typical accounting scandal case in the business world. And I define the root cause of the bankruptcy is due to corporate management based on unethical leadership of key senior leaders. Based on the lessons from Enron, the most important factor for ethical management is the development of ethical leadership by key senior leaders. I propose the tasks by dividing them into personal and organizational dimensions. And I compose, I suggest the roles and tasks that senior leaders should perform. The lessons from the Enron case is that any law or institution can not prevent fundamentally corporate ethical failures. So the more high-ranking leaders are responsible for corporate management, the more ethical leadership they should develop. In other words, they should have personal qualities or characteristics of a moral person, and develop a moral compass that always guides them toward truth, integrity and honesty. And as a moral manager, they should be able to create and coordinate ethical organizational culture and climate based on the common purposes and values of company.
