밀은 쾌락의 질적 차이를 도입하여 고급 쾌락론을 발전시켰다. 그는 벤담의 유쾌한 심리상태로서의 쾌락 개념과 아리스토텔레스의 활동으로서의 쾌락 개념을 비판적으로 종합하여 ‘고등 능력의 발휘 활동에 수반되는 쾌락’을 고급 쾌락으로 개념화하였다. 밀은 고급 쾌락에 기초하여 인간에게 가장 합당한 행복을 ‘고급 쾌락 추구의 존재 방식’, 즉 ‘고등 능력의 발휘에서 쾌락을 누리는 존재 방식’이라고 주장하였다. 밀의 질적 쾌락주의 행복관은 벤담의 양적 쾌락주의 행복관과 아리스토텔레스의 행복주의를 종합한 아리스토텔레스주의적 쾌락주의 행복관이라고 특징지을 수 있다.
Abstract
J. S. Mill introduced the concept of quality in pleasure and developed the doctrine of higher pleasure. He critically synthesized the Bentham’s concept of pleasures as pleasurable mental-states and the Aristotle’s concept of pleasures as activities, and conceptualized the higher pleasure as the pleasure supervened on activities exerting higher faculties. Based on the doctrine of higher pleasure, he said, happiness most appropriate to the feelings of human beings consists of the mode of existence which pursuits higher pleasures, that is, enjoys pleasures derived from higher faculties. Mill’s qualitative hedonist conception of happiness is characterized as Aristotelian hedonist conception of happiness that synthesizes Bentham’s quantitative hedonist conception of happiness and Aristotle’s eudaimonism.
