평화가 자기 자신과의 관계, 타인과의 관계, 공동체와의 관계 그리고 자연 생태계와의 관계 속에서의 조화로운 공존이라고 한다면, 평화문화의 창출은 단순히 폭력과 전쟁의 부재 상태를 넘어 인간 삶의 다양한 차원에서 이와 같은 공존과 조화의 상태를 내면화하고 일상화하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 이처럼 평화가 본질적으로 관계의 문제라는 점에서 평화교육은 삶의 다양한 관계에서 요청되는 공존과 조화의 상태를 지향하고 추구할 수 있는 능력과 태도를 길러주어야 한다. 이를 위해 평화교육은 무엇보다도 전체적 생태학적 패러다임에 대한 인식에서 출발해야 한다. 인간은 자신을 둘러싸고 있는 환경과 교류하고 소통해야 하는 관계적 존재라는 점에서 평화교육은 삶의 다양하고 복잡한 관계망과 상호의존성을 일깨우고 확인시켜 주어야 한다. 그리고 이러한 전체적 생태학적 체계 사고로의 전환에 기초하여, 평화교육이 윤리적 존재로서의 인간의 도덕적 상상력을 자극하고 회복할 수 있을 때 지속가능한 평화문화의 창출과 확산이 가능할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to suggest the direction and some tasks of peace education for the creation of a culture of peace. In general, it is regarded that the goal of a culture of peace is to realize peace in everyday life and in the hearts of people. For the realization of peace in daily lives, it is necessary to shift the way we perceive peace from the external conditions for peace into the cultivation of peaceful mind of people. A culture of peace honors the essential needs and aspirations of all human beings and recognizes that these should be considered in the context of the complex and interconnected web of life. In this regard, a culture of peace nurtures strivings for the perception of self identity, mutual understanding, tolerance toward others and coexistence, active participation and solidarity in the community, and conservation of ecological value. The future of a culture of peace depends on the educational practice for peace competency of the people with the peaceful, global, ecological mind and attitude. In this context, contemporary peace education must enable individuals to think deeply and creatively, and to work collaboratively as citizens to alter social practices that hinder their peaceful culture. To create and spread a culture of peace, peace education must actively strive toward positive values, which enable to develop the capacity to see things from a holistic point of view and with moral imagination.
