예술의 본질은 인간의 감수성과 상상력 그리고 그것에 기반한 창조성의 표현이다. 따라서 예술과 예술 활동은 이성과 합리성에 기초한 인간 이해의 한계를 극복하거나 보완할 수 있다. 시민성과 시민교육 차원에서도 이성 중심의 시각에서 벗어나 감성적 차원의 접근이 균형을 이루게 될 때 시민됨의 의미를 보다 통합적으로 규명할 수 있을 것이다. 예술과 예술 활동은 시민의 창의성과 감수성을 자극하고 계발함으로써 시민성의 내용을 보완하거나 풍부하게 할 수 있다. 요컨대, 예술시민성은 시민들이 미적 경험을 통해 타자 그리고 공동체와 상호작용하고 결속할 수 있는 가능성과 기회를 확대할 뿐만 아니라 공공선의 실현을 위한 예술 활동의 사회적 책임을 강조한다. 따라서 예술시민성에 대한 관심과 논의는 시민됨의 문제에서 중요한 주제가 아닐 수 없다.
Abstract
The essence of art is the expression of human sensitivity, imagination, and creativity based on them. Therefore, artistic activities can overcome or supplement the limitations of human understanding based on reason and rationality. In terms of citizenship and civic education, a more integrated understanding of what it means to be a citizen can be achieved when the rational perspective is balanced with an emotional approach. Art and artistic activities can supplement or enrich the content of citizenship by stimulating and developing citizens’ creativity and sensitivity. In short, artistic citizenship not only expands the possibility for citizens to interact and bond with others and the community through aesthetic experiences, but also emphasizes the social responsibility of artistic activities for the realization of the common good. Therefore, the discussion on artistic citizenship cannot but be an important topic in the question of citizenship.
