Abstract

This paper offers a critical examination of how the development of artificial intelligence technologies is reshaping the structure of democratic partici- pation and the very logic of political decision-making. In the age of AI, democracy confronts a structural transformation characterized by the technologization of politics — a shift that entails not merely the digitization of procedures, but a deeper reconfiguration of politics into a problem of computational optimization. To conceptualize this shift, this paper delineates three archetypal models of AI-driven politics: the Necromancy, the Utilitarian Machine, and the Philosopher King. Each model represents a distinct mode of algorithmic governance, carrying specific risks and normative implications for democratic legitimacy and agency. The paper further interrogates how post-political utopias envisioned by prominent Big Tech entrepreneurs undermine political autonomy and civic subjectivity by substituting technocratic rationality for democratic deliberation. Ultimately, the argument posits that for technology to function as a condition of politics — rather than its replacement — democracy must be institutionally reconstituted through procedural delay and accountability mechanisms. Democracy, at its core, is reaffirmed as a domain of human action, grounded in the collective endurance of irresolvable political questions.
