Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the flows and determinants of femalemigration in Central Asia. Return migration after the collapse of the Soviet Unionwas followed by a massive labor migration. Remittances reach from 10% to 50% of the GDP of Central Asian countries, constituting a corner stone of nationaleconomies. Growing importance of migration in this region results in academicattentions. However less attention has paid to female migration that demands genderperspectives to capture the features of migration flows. Female migration in Central Asia confirms the effect of push-pull factors, aswell as non-economic factors such as gender-sensitive migration policies andnetworks of diaspora. In particular, post-Soviet nation- or state-identity buildingprocess created a difference in gender-perspectives among Central Asian countries, which diversified female migration patterns. Female migrations may lead to agrowing demand for gender equality and social changes, for which a furtherdiscussion may be requested.
