Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine how Tolstoy’s experiences and memories are incorporated into his literary works, with reference to his first novel Childhood. For Tolstoy, the key to writing was thorough, almost obsessive self-reflection, and based on this, an affective understanding of the world. Therefore, his works are akin to sustained attempts at self-exploration, which can be seen as a rendering through fiction of his own memories. What should not be overlooked here is that his memories are comprised of not only events that actually happened but also potentialities that should have come about and those that he wished would transpire in the future. That is, his works are a combination of real and unreal or desired “memories”. In order to capture the mysterious and independent world that cannot be encompassed solely through empirical perceptions of material objects, Tolstoy developed a dual worldview consisting of both an imaginary and a realistic world by assimilating together both types of “memory” in his works. This fictional strategy forms a contrast between a world where the origin of existence is represented and the real or quotidian world where the essential is replaced by the superficial. Through the permeating sadness created by the conflicts and overlaps between these two worlds, Tolstoy depicts nature, love, religion, and life from the perspective of highly pure moral emotions, which are completely distinct from a notional moral code. This is his unique literary characteristic, and the interpretation of his novel Childhood from this perspective offers a unique insight into his worldview.
