Abstract

This study analyzes the regional experience of Ukraine during World War II, which became one of the main causes of internal strife and national division in the process of building a nation-state with a unified national identity during the post-Soviet years. Classifying Ukraine into four regions―western, central, southern, and eastern, this study examines the historical experiences of each region before and during World War II. It shows that a long history of foreign rule in the western region resulted in the emergence of extreme nationalist forces that once collaborated with Nazi-German occupied forces and fought against both the Nazis and the Soviet troops to achieve the independence of Ukraine while committing genocide of Jews and Poles, considered as “Others.” In contrast, strong pro-Russian sentiment emerged in the eastern and southern regions, which were heavily russified from the eighteenth century and benefited from prewar Soviet industrialization policies. These regional differences in historical experiences and identities were inherited in post-Soviet Ukraine and ultimately served as key causes of regional division.
