Abstract

Ukraine is a geopolitical hub and has been pushing to join NATO and the European Union based on its large population, agricultural and heavy industrial bases, and high potential for science and technology in Europe. However, in the face of Russia’s opposition to its inclusion in the West, it has gone beyond economic pressure and is now under attack. This paper looked at factors that have undermined Ukraine’s potential in the historical context: excessive dependence on foreign powers, short experience as an independent state, division between East and West regions, populist politics using them, and insufficient self-defense. As these negative legacies remain in Ukraine, it has been more than 30 years since independence from the Soviet Union, but it failed to revive its potential and was annexed to Crimea, followed by an invasion into the capital in 2022. Ukraine’s external dependence on post-war reconstruction projects and repayment of war expenses could increase, and its defense capabilities could become more remote due to the financial burden. But given the deplorable situation of being still under foreign influence for centuries, Ukrainians should be more focused on recognizing their weaknesses and finding ways to improve them.
