Abstract
Political polarization in American politics is at a modern high. For at least the last thirty years, Republicans have become more conservative and Democrats have become more liberal. For all these divergence between the two parties in American politics, John McCain's distinctive position as a reform conservative and strenuous challenge to overcome polarization chorus has been appealing to both Republicans and Democrats. If polarization is a norm in politics, then, how we could make sense of McCain's strong popularity across divergent parties. In this paper, we look at when and under what conditions reform conservatism of John McCain has occurred and also examine the inevitable limitation amidst the era of political polarization. Using historical analysis, we make effort to locate his position in the vein of reform conservative movement of Theodore Roosevelt in early modern period. In this paper, we also discuss the implications of John McCain's challenge for the future of American politics.
