Abstract
Political participation of citizens is one of fundamental assumptions for representative democracy. The assumption, however, appears to be seriously violated. This study attempts to examine a possibility that electorate polarization, which is the extension of partisan polarization, enhances political participation. Using American National Election Studies during the period of 1980 to 2000, I found that electorate polarization increases the likelihood of political participation of voters. The more voters perceive a difference between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, the more likely they participate. In particular, it is more evident among those who are weakly or strongly identified with a party than those who are pure independents or leaning partisans. The magnitude of the relationship, however, does not increase over the years. It indicates that partisan polarization has a limited influence on political participation of voters.
