본 논문은 민주화 세대를 중심으로 세대 간, 그리고 민주화 세대 내부의 정치적 가치관과 정책적 태도 등에서 나타나는 이념적 특성을 살펴보는 한편, 정치관여와 정당지지 성향 등 정치행태의 차이를 분석함으로써 민주화 세대의 정치세대 효과를 검증하는 데 중점을 두었다. 분석 결과, 한국 사회는 전체적으로 자유보다 질서를 중시하는 가치관과 대북지원, 국가보안법 폐지 등에서는 보수적인 특성이 강한 반면, 자유보다 평등을 중시하는 가치관과 전통적인 여성 역할, 환경보존, 복지 등에서는 진보적인 특성이 강하였다. 또한 정치적 가치관에 따른 이념성향의 분포를 살펴볼 때 자유보다 질서나 평등을 중시하는 인민주의자가 모든 정치세대에서 다수 분포를 이루는 유형이었는데, 상대적으로 민주화 성취세대는 질서나 평등보다 자유를 가장 중시하는 자유론자가 많았으며, 민주화 투쟁세대는 질서를 가장 중시하되 평등보다 자유를 우선시하는 보수주의자가 많은 특징을 나타내었다. 결론적으로 한국 사회는 정치적 가치관이나 정책적 쟁점 등에서 이념적으로 세대 간 차이는 있으나, 갈등의 폭이 그리 크지 않다는 점에서 이질적이기보다 동질적인 특성을 지닌다 할 수 있다. 그러나 특히 민주화 성취세대가 정치행태에서 다른 어떤 정치세대보다 적극적인 정치관여와 야당에 대한 지지성향을 나타내었다는 점은, 질서와 평등의 가치가 지배적인 한국 사회에서 자유론자의 비율이 높았던 민주화 성취세대가 새로운 정치적 대안을 모색하는 대항적 세력으로 소수파의 정치적 불만을 드러내는 것이라 해석된다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the ideological characteristics of political generation in Korea and its effects on political behavior such as political involvements and party supports. It shows that the Korean society is conservative in valuing order more than freedom and supporting the issues such as aids for North Korea and abolition of National Security Act, whereas it is liberal in valuing freedom more than equality and support the issues such as role of women, environmental preservation and social welfare programs. It also finds that major ideological type in all the political generation is populists who favors both equality and order more than freedom but the democratization realization generation(DRG) tends to be libertarians who value freedom more than order or equality while the democratization striving generation tends to be conservatives who value freedom more than equality but are willing to restrict freedom to preserve social order. An interesting finding is the high political involvements of DRG in political interests and participation as well as their supports for the parties out of power. It implies that DRG seeks for the new political alternatives as a ideological minority against the overriding society for equality and order.
