Abstract
Andy Clark and David Chalmers's seminal paper “The Extended Mind”(1998) launched a research program that would be named after the title of the paper. But Fred Adams and Ken Aizawa criticize this program in a series of papers and one book, expecially by attacking the parity principle that Clark and Chalmers take to be a basic principle of the extended mind program. According to Adams and Aizawa, they commit a ‘coupling-constitution fallacy’. I investigate and evaluate the debate between these two camps that also implies confrontation of extracranialist view with intracranialist view of the mind. My analysis suggests that substantial portion of this confrontation lies in a verbal dispute, or a propaganda battle between two competing research programs. This kind of confrontation could in principle be conciliated by a reasonable third position that invokes a complementarity (or integrative) viewpoint. But I propose here one salient argument against Clark and Chalmers. There is an essential difference between the biological cognitive system (i. e. brain) and a complementary artefact, which means a chasm within the allegedly extended cognitive system. The latter, but not the former, needs mediation of a proper interpretive system in order to be a functioning part of the whole cognitive system. Intracranialist program and extracranialist one are complementary to each other. But we should make a choice between the two, when we come to the questions about ontological status of artificial intelligent beings.
