내용 외재주의는 심적 상태의 유형에 관한 외재주의인 반면, 확장된 마음은 개별자, 구현, 내용 담지자에 관한 외재주의로 간주될 수 있다. 오토의 사례, 클락의 산재된 원인, 윌슨의 개별자 외재주의 논증 등을 통해 이러한 두 종류의 외재주의 사이의 관계를 따져보는 것이 이 논문의 주된 목적이다. 특히, 확장된 마음이 내용 외재주의가 봉착하는 심적 인과의 문제에 어떤 함축을 가지는가? 함축이 있어야 한다고 기대하는 이유는 확장되는 마음의 최소한 한 부분으로 주장되는 것은 지향적 내용을 본질로 가지는 명제태도들이기 때문이다. 그리고 지향적 태도들이 확장됨으로서 지향성의 인과설명적 유관성에 대한 문제를 해소할 수 있다면 이는 심리철학에서의 기존의 논의에 획기적인 전기를 제공해 줄 것이다. 그러나 이 논문의 결론은 확장된 마음이 그러한 기대를 충족시키지 못하며 따라서 최소한 지향성과 관련된 심성의 영역에 있어 확장된 마음이 가지는 기여는 지극히 불투명하다는 것이다.
Abstract
While content externalism concerns the type of mental states, the extended mind can be regarded as a thesis about the token, realization of mental states. The main goal of this paper is to investigate possible relations between these two kinds of externalism by discussing Otto's case, Clark's notion of "scattered cause" and Wilson's argument for token externalism. Especially, does the extended mind have an implication on the problem of mental causation that plagues content externalism? Since beliefs and other intentional states are included in the list of what can be extended, one might expect that the extended mind can resolve the problem of mental causation and thus make a valuable contribution to the philosophy of mind. But the conclusion of this paper is that such expectation is premature and it is entirely unclear whether the extended mind sheds a new light on the realm of the mental marked by intentionality.
