클락과 찰머스(Clark and Chalmers)의 확장된 마음 가설에 따르면 인지는 단순히 뇌 안에 있는 것이 아니라 뇌, 몸, 환경에 걸쳐 있다. 인지 체계를 구성하는 요소들은 신경세포나 신경전달물질로 구성된 내적 자원들에 한정되지 않고 계산기, 컴퓨터, 책과 같은 인공물, 셈을 할 때 사용하는 손가락, 인지를 지원하는 기타 환경도 포함한다. 이 글의 목표는 확장된 마음 가설에 대해 아담스와 아이자와(Adams and Aizawa), 루펄트(Rupert)가 각각 제시한 비판을 검토하고 그런 비판들로부터 확장된 마음 가설을 변호하는데 있다. 논의 순서는 다음과 같다. 2절에서는 클락과 찰머스가 제시한 두 가지 사고실험을 통하여 그들이 의미하는 마음의 확장 방식을 살펴볼 것이다. 특히 동등성원리(parity principle)와 능동적 외재주의(active externalism)를 검토할 것이다. 3절에서는 아담스와 아이자와가 인지의 필수적 요소로 제시한 본래성 조건(intrinsic condition)과 인과적 개별화 조건(causal individuation condition)을 중심으로 그들의 비판이 성립하지 않다는 점을 보일 것이다. 4절에서는 루펄트가 확장된 인지 가설에 대한 경쟁 가설로서 제시한 내화된 인지 가설(hypothesis of embedded cognition)을 검토하고 그의 비판이 확장된 마음 가설에 대해 진정한 문제를 제기할 수 없다는 것을 보일 것이다.
Abstract
According to the hypothesis of extended mind by Clark and Chalmers, cognition consists of brain, body, and environment and it isn't merely within the brain. The cognitive elements contain not only the inner resources such as neurons and neurotransmitters but also calculator, computer, artifacts such as book, fingers for calculating, and other environmental things supporting our cognitive activities. The purpose of the paper is to examine two criticisms by Adams and Aizawa, and by Rupert respectively to the hypothesis of extended mind and to defend the hypothesis from those criticisms. My discussions run as follows. In section two I shall examine the way of extending the mind through discussing two thought experiments given by Clark and Chalmers, in which I especially shall discuss the parity principle and active externalism. In section three I shall examine the criticism by Adams and Aizawa through focusing on the intrinsic condition and the causal individuation condition. In section four I shall examine the hypothesis of embedded cognition suggested as a rival to the hypothesis of extended mind by Rupert and show that his criticism doesn't give any serious problems to the latter.
