Abstract

It is a known fact that Reid’s notion of volition based on agent-causation has the problem of an infinite regress between volition and the exertion of our active power which brings this volition about. However, by claiming that some mental operations or effects of speculative power cannot be distinguished from the exertions which raise the mental operations (i.e. the effect can be the exertion itself in some mental operations) and that volition is one of them (not the exertion of active power), Reid’s notion of volition can be free from this infinite regress problem.
