Abstract
Mental events are caused to happen by the result of physical processes, and also physical events are caused to happen by the result of mental processes. When the connectivity between the determination of events or interdependence upon one another of events is expressed in terms of causation as such, the causation fixes as one viewpoint the target that comes under the relationship of cause and outcome. Under this viewpoint of causation, one event is understood in the continuous relationship with another event, and thus the reason because one event causes another event to happen can be explained. Likewise, the reason is because one event is placed in a relationship of being dependent on and determining another event and thus the occurrence of one event can give an understanding and explanation of another event. The issue of mental causation is formulated not by two types of substance, but by two kinds of events, namely, mental events and physical events. Likewise, this leads to a question: how can a mental event be the cause of a physical event, and how can a physical event be the cause of a mental event?
