Abstract
According to Mencius, since we all have four beginnings of morality in our heart-mind(xin(心)), we can act morally. These beginnings are a sort of emotions. Mencius takes the emotion to be a core of the morality. In respect of western traditional ethics, however, emotions subject an agent to the world, so they have been understood to make her or him non-autonomic. For that reason, the formalists such as Kant would like to remove the emotion out of the moral theory. This essay analyzes the case of King Hsüan of Chʽȋ(齊宣王) and the ox of the 'King Hȗi of Liang Part I, 7'(梁惠王 上, 7) in Mencius. From this analysis, I examine what is exactly Mencius' position about the emotion and then investigate how it could obtain the autonomy. Finally, I try to provide my critical comment. F. Perkins interprets that Mencius understood the emotion to be passive like the western traditional philosophers and he argued that the true moral behavior should come from sufficiently emotional motivation. I agree with Perkins' interpretation. In the conclusion, chapter III, I simply examine the possibility of a compromise between Mencius and Kant.
