Abstract
The U.S. and Russia's geopolitical postures towards the Middle East have been seen in different ways. Since Obama administration adopted new foreign policy towards the Middle East of ‘non-violent pluralism,’ the U.S. keeps its position to be an ‘offshore balancer,’ not to be directly involved in the region but to lead from the behind. Having reflected the Middle East policy under the previous government, Obama administration explicitly keeps ‘the diplomacy first approach’ and multilateral preference. In contrast, Russia started actively being involved in protracted conflict in and around the Middle East. It has postulated that the Middle East would be the new sphere of Russian influence. Having been through with the Ukraine affairs, Putin's Russia has been trying to make an every effort to increase its influence and preponderance in the Middle East, Syria in particular. Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria has been able to sustain in the power being supported by Russian military presence.
