Abstract
In the wake of the global financial crisis, China’s foreign policy experienced an important change. In 2010, China pursued its national interests assertively, suggesting it no longer sticked to a moderate foreign policy of peace and cooperation it had maintained since the late 1990s. This article examines the change that happened in China’s foreign policy. By examining China’s foreign policy behavior, forces that propelled the change, and the impact of the change, this article suggests that assertive behavior has become an important component of China’s foreign policy. Although the Chinese government has eventually retreated back to a moderate foreign policy, not only have voices for a hard-line foreign policy continued in China but also China’s official foreign policy has, however intermittently, revealed assertive behavior
