퍼트넘의 ‘내재적 실재론’과 굿먼의 ‘비실재론’에 관해 논의하고자 한다. ‘형이상학적 실재론’에 대한 비판은 퍼트넘이 주장하는 내재적 실재론의 핵심 사안이다. 세계는 고정되어 있으며 그 세계가 있는 그대로 고스란히 인간에게 어느 시점에 드러난다는 관점을 퍼트넘은 비판한다. 퍼트넘은 또한 ‘진리 대응설’을 공격하고 ‘합리적 수용 가능성’을 주장하고 있다. 이론 또는 기술은 고정된 실재와의 대응 관계에 의해 참 또는 거짓으로 판명나지 않는다는 것이다. 인간 의존적이고 시간 의존적인 서로 다른 방식에 따라 이론 또는 기술은 세계와 대조된다고 퍼트넘은 말한다. 그런 의미에서 세계에 관한 유일하게 참인 이론 또는 기술은 존재하지 않는다는 것이다. 굿먼은 ‘세계의 복수성’을 주장한다. 그는 원리적으로 다수의 세계 ‘버전들’이 존재할 수 있다고 본다. 따라서 굿먼은 ‘이미 만들어진 세계’라는 관념을 부정적으로 인식한다. 서로 다른 버전은 세계를 서로 다른 방식으로 구성한다는 것이다. 그러므로 굿먼도 진리 대응설을 부정한다. 그렇다면, 굿먼의 주장에서, 버전들은 모두 대등한가? 그렇지 않다. 굿먼은 ‘옳음’이라는 개념을 통해 수용 가능성 버전과 그렇지 않은 버전을 구별한다. ‘그린’과 같은 술어는 투사 가능하기 때문에 옳은 버전을 구성하지만, ‘그루’와 같은 술어는 투사 불가능하기 때문에 옳은 버전을 구성하지 못한다는 것이다. 고정된 실재에 대한 부정과 진리 대응설에 대한 비판이라는 측면에서 내재적 실재론과 비실재론은 양자 간의 미묘한 차이에도 불구하고 기본적으로 수렴하는 입장으로 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
I argue on Putnam's internal realism and Goodman's irrealism. Criticism on the metaphysical realism is the crucial interest of the internal realism. Putnam criticizes the view that asserts the world is fixed and the world as it is reveals itself to human sometime. He attacks the correspondence theory of truth and asserts the rational acceptability instead. It is said by him theories or descriptions might not become true or false by their correspondences with reality. Putnam says that theories or descriptions dependent upon human and time are contrasted with the world. In such a sense, there is no uniquely true theory or description. Goodman holds multiplicity of world. He sees there can be multiple world versions in principle. Therefore, Goodman negatively reacts the notion of ready-made world. Different world versions construct the world differently. He denies correspondence theory of truth too. Then, in Goodman's view, are all versions equal? Not so. Goodman distinguishes acceptable versions and unacceptable versions by the concept of 'rightness'. Predicates like 'green' construct right versions because they are projectable, but those like 'grue' do not construct right versions because they are nonprojectable. In terms of negation of fixed reality and critique of correspondence theory of truth, internal realism and irrealism are basically convergent positions in spite of subtle differences between them.
