아리스토텔레스는 『분석론 후서』 II권 19장에서 ‘논증적 지식의 원리들(archai)은 어떻게 알려지는가?’라는 질문에 세 가지 설명을 제시하여 답한다. 첫번째가 원리 인식에 대한 발생적 설명(genetic account)이고 두 번째가 이에 대한직유적인 설명’(simile account)이며, 세 번째는 앞서의 두 설명을 새로운 틀로 재구성하는 설명(recasting account)이다. 이 글은 우선 아리스토텔레스의 논증이론을명제들 간의 관계로 이해하는 기존의 해석이 세 가지 설명에서 논의되는 지각과보편의 관계를 밝힐 수 없음을 지적한다. 그리고 세 가지 설명 각각을 논증적 탐구의 맥락에서 검토하고 여기서 논의되고 있는 지각의 의미를 고찰한다. 그 결과, 아리스토텔레스는 학적 탐구를 가능케 하는 인간 인식 토대를 지각과 귀납에서 찾고있음을 주장할 것이다. 또한 지각으로부터 보편이 출현한다는 세 가지 설명의 총괄적 진술은 지각을 통한 참된 인식의 가능성을 부정한 플라톤을 비판적으로 겨냥하고 있음을 밝힐 것이다.
Abstract
Aristotle gives three accounts about how the principles of demonstrativesciences are acquired in his Posterior Analytics II.19. This article aims toexplain the two statements in the third account, namely, recasting account thatfollows the genetic account and simile account: “though you perceiveparticulars, perception is of universals”; “we must get to know the primitive byinduction, for this is the way in which perception instills universals.” A uniquetheory of perception in the Posterior Analytics II.19, represented by thesestatement is on the one hand a dramatic and effective critique on Plato’s theoryof recollection. On the other hand, this theory of perception tells that theepistemic ground of demonstrative inquiry is perception, where induction isperformed.
