이주민의 지역사회 갈등경험과 사회적 거리: 사회적 신뢰의 조절효과를 중심으로

초록

본 연구의 주된 목적은 이주민의 지역사회 갈등경험과 사회적 거리의 관계를 사회적 신뢰가 조절하는지를 검증하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 「2020년 구로구 외국인주민 생활실태조사」의 표본조사 자료를 분석하였다. 전체 응답자 수는 1,009명이다. 분석 결과 이주민이 지역사회에서 한국인주민과 경험한 갈등 경험은 10% 내외로 크지 않았다. 가장 큰 갈등 요인은 주차문제와 쓰레기 배출 방법이었다. 다음으로 사회적 거리는 평균 0.51점(5점척도)으로, 한국인들이 자신(이주민)들을 국민, 마을주민, 이웃, 가까운 친구, 친인척 등의 모든 관계 맺기를 하나도 꺼리지 않을 것이라고 응답한 비율은 81.9%로 높았다. 마지막으로 이 두 요인 간 인과 관계를 검증하였다. 한국인주민과 갈등경험이 많은 이주민일수록 사회적 거리는 증가하였다. 하지만 이 둘 사이를 사회적 자본인 신뢰가 조절하였다. 지역 이웃과 지역사회, 한국사회에 대한 신뢰가 높은 이주민일 경우 갈등경험이 사회적 거리에 미치는 부정적 영향을 상쇄한다는 것이다. 이상의 결과를 기반으로 이주민과 선주만의 공존을 위해서는 우선 집단 간 교류와 상호작용을 통한 각자의 생활세계와 문화적 차이를 이해하고, 갈등을 적극적으로 중재할 수 있는 상호문화교류 프로그램이 필요하다고 볼 수 있다. 특히 외국인밀집지역에서 상호 신뢰하고, 호혜적 관계를 증대시킬 수 있는 적극적 프로그램과 정책이 필요함을 제언하였다.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to examine whether social trust is able to regulate the relationship between migrants’ experiences of social conflict and their sense of social distance from non-migrant residents. The research used data from the “2020 Survey on the Living Conditions of Foreign Residents in Guro-gu,”and data from a total 1,009 residents was utilized for analysis. According to the results of the analysis, few migrants (approx. 10%) experienced conflicts with Korean residents in their community. The most common points of conflict were regarding parking and waste disposal methods. Next, social distance came out to an average of 0.51 points (on a 5-point scale), and 81.9% of migrants responded that Koreans would not be reluctant to form a relationship with migrants themselves as fellow citizens, community members, neighbors, close friends, or relatives. Lastly, the research examined the causal relationship between these two factors. The more conflicts migrants had with Korean residents, the more social distance the migrants felt; however, trust, a form of social capital, was able to regulate the relationship between the two. In the case of certain migrant residents, the negative impact of conflict experiences on social distance was offset by the high levels of trust they had in their neighbors, local community, and Korean society. Based on these results, for migrants and non-migrant residents to co-exist, there is a need for an intercultural exchange program that can develop an understanding of each other’s lifestyles and cultural differences, as well as actively mediate conflicts between the two groups. Active programming and policies are necessary to develop mutually trusting and beneficial relationships, especially in areas with a concentrated foreigner population.
