Abstract
The purposes of this study are to analyze the structural relationship between attitudes toward foreigners, conflict, perceived community safety and social distance from foreigners, and to suggest policy implications. We used data from the 2023 Social Integration Survey conducted by the Korea Institute of Public Administration and tested the hypotheses using responses from 8,221 respondents. Results showed that demographic factors, such as gender and education level had a statistically significant positive effect on social distance, while age and income had a statistically significant negative effect on social distance from foreigners. Attitudes toward foreigners were found to have a positive effect on community safety awareness and social distance from foreigners, and conflict between Koreans and foreigners had a negative effect on both community safety awareness and social distance from foreigners. In addition, the results indicated that community safety awareness plays a significant mediating role in the relationship between attitudes toward foreigners, conflict with foreigners and social distance from foreigners. Based on these results, the present study discussed theoretical and policy implications for enhancing residents’ safety awareness and improving social distance.
