Abstract

This research investigated changes in materialism and mastery goal among female college students in relation to the satisfaction of basic psychological need. Using Latent Class Growth Analysis we identified three distinct groups. The intrinsic growth-pursuing group consisted 13.1%(64 people) of the total, who showed no change in their materialism and mastery goal while also having the lowest materialistic value and the highest mastery goal over time. The extrinsic achievement-pursuing group consisted 31.2%(152 people) of the total who had the highest initial level of materialism, which gradually increased over time, and had the lowest initial level of mastery gaol which gradually decreased over time. The extrinsic growth-pursuing group consisted 55.6%(271 people) of the total who had an initial level of materialism and mastery goal that was average for the entire group, with materialism gradually increasing over time. People who were more satisfied with autonomy tended to be more intrinsic growth-pursuing than the other two groups. In addition, those who were more satisfied with relatedness were more likely to be in extrinsic growth-pursuing group compared to being extrinsic achievement-pursuing group.
