Abstract
This study aimed to explore the relationship between materialistic values, life satisfaction, and peer attachment among elementary school students during early adolescence. We speculated that high materialistic values in early adolescence would negatively affect their basic psychological needs, leading to lower life satisfaction and peer attachment. To test this hypothesis, 342 students, both male and female, from 5th and 6th grade in the Incheon area were surveyed. Statistical analysis was conducted using structural equations to test the mediating effect of basic psychological needs on materialism, life satisfaction, and peer attachment. The results showed that materialism negatively affected life satisfaction and peer attachment, while the three basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) partially mediated materialism and life satisfaction, and completely mediated peer attachment. This implies that materialistic values impact the psychosocial adjustments of early adolescent development, and how low satisfaction in basic psychological needs plays a role in the relationship between materialism and psychosocial adjustment. The implications of early adolescent therapy and education, along with suggestions for future research, are discussed.
