Abstract
If one's own happiness serves merely as an instrumental means to facilitate agency, then caring for one’s own happiness can only be a simple recommendation, and not an obligation. On the other hand, if happiness is an integral part as an intrinsic means of moral execution, then this is not easily reconciled with Kant’s assertion in his ethics of autonomy that moral execution is possible without regard for one’s own happiness. This essay attempts to avoid this dilemma by interpreting one's happiness as a potential good the morality of which is a necessary condition for Kant. One’s happiness has a moral value insofar as it is part of the direct activity of duty and as it enables an easier or more concrete fulfillment of duty. Therefore, for Kant, one’s happiness is defined as an indirect goal rather than a direct one since it has the status of a means rather than a moral end itself. Yet caring for one’s happiness is not just merely a recommendation because it functions as a component of the moral activity itself insofar as Kant connects the notion of one’s own happiness with the moral activity of direct duty, namely by taking the latter as a necessary condition for happiness. One’s own happiness can thus acquire the character of a responsibly imposed duty.
