베넷의 『생동하는 물질』은 생기 유물론을 대표하는 영향력 있는 저작이다. 이 책에서 베넷의 목표는 인간만이 유일한, 또는 가장 중요한 행위 주체라는 고정 관념을 비판하고 그동안 아무런 자발성, 능동성이 없다고 간주된 물질 대상들의 힘 (power)을 입증하는 것이다. 여기에서 우리는 이러한 그녀의 철학적 기획을 비판적 으로 검토해보고자 한다. 우선, 『생동하는 물질』의 1장에서 그녀가 사물적 힘 (thing-power)이라고 부르는 것에 대해 제시하는 첫 번째 예를 살펴볼 것이다. 이 검토를 통해서 그녀의 논의가 주관적이거나 문학적인 은유의 한계를 벗어나지 못하 고 있다는 점이 드러날 것이다. 다음으로, 2장의 핵심을 이루는 2003년 북미의 대 규모 정전 사고에 대한 그녀의 생기 유물론적 분석을 살펴볼 것이다. 이 분석은 그 녀의 입장이 가진 현실적 한계를 여실히 드러낸다. 생기 유물론은, 인간 주체가 행 위를 독점하지 못하게 만든다는 미명 하에 실제로 권력자와 지배자들에게 형이상학 적 면죄부를 부여하는 결과를 낳거나, 그게 아니면 적어도 그러한 결과에 무방비 상태로 노출되어 있기 때문이다. 끝으로, 우리는, 베넷의 생기 유물론에는 제대로 된 정치적, 윤리적 기획을 끌어낼 수 있는 책임 있는 행위의 개념이 없다는 점을 지적할 것이다. 베넷은 도덕적 책임이 어떤 결과를 적극적으로 산출하는 행위능력이 아니라 그 결과를 막을 수 있는 소극적 행위능력과 관련된다는 점을 보지 못한 다. 결국 존재자의 능동성에 대한 본질주의적 일원론 형이상학에 맞서, 수동성에 대한 일반 이론을 사유할 필요가 있다.
Abstract
Bennett's Vibrant Matter is an influential work of vital materialism. In this book, Bennett's goal is to criticize the idea that humans are the only or most important agents of action, and to show the power of material things that have been regarded as having no creativity or activity. Here, we would like to critically examine this philosophical project. First, we will scrutinize the first example of what she calls “thing-power” in Chapter 1 of Vibrant Matter. It will be revealed that her arguments cannot go beyond the limits of subjective or literary metaphor. Next, we will examine her vital materialist analysis of a North American power blackout in 2003, which constitutes the core of Chapter 2. This analysis shows the practical limitations of her position. This is because vital materialism actually results in the granting of metaphysical indulgences to those in power and rulers under the guise of preventing the human subject from monopolizing status of agent, or at least remains defenseless to such consequences. Finally, we will point out that Bennett's vital materialism lacks the concept of responsible action which can make possible a proper political and ethical project. Bennett does not see that moral responsibility has to do with the ability of negative action to prevent an outcome, not to the capacity to act positively to produce an outcome. In the end, it is necessary to conceive a general theory of passivity against the essentialist monistic metaphysics of the activity of beings.
