이 논문은 스티븐 샤비로가 자신의 저작 『사물들의 우주』에서 전개한 범심론 정당화 논변들을 비판적으로 검토한다. 샤비로의 논의는 사변적 실재론과 신유물론의 몇몇 입장에 대한 형이상학적 정당화를 제공한다는 점에서 주목해볼 가치가 있다. 샤비로는 범심론을 뒷받침하는 근거로 샤비로는 화이트헤드의 유기체 형이상학, 비트겐슈타인의 사적 감각 논증, 게일런 스트로슨의 범심론 논증을 동원한다. 우리는 이를 차례로 살펴볼 것이다. 우선, 화이트헤드의 유기체 형이상학에 관한 검토는, 화이트헤드가 인간중심주의적인 상관주의를 출발점으로 삼는다는 점에서 샤비로의 관점과 다를 뿐만 아니라, 샤비로 스스로가 인간중심주의에서 완전히 자유롭지 못하다는 점을 드러낼 것이다. 다음으로, 샤비로가 비트겐슈타인의 사적 감각 논증을 활용할 때 그는 수행적 모순을 범한다는 점이 지적될 것이다. 우리는 이 점을 보다 분명히 드러내기 위해 샤비로의 다른 저작 『탈인지』의 4장을 검토해볼 것이다. 끝으로, 스트로슨의 논증은 문제적인 창발 개념에 기초하기 때문에 범심론을 유일하게 합리적인 물리주의적 입장으로 논증하려는 그의 시도는 성공적이지 않다. 이상의 비판적 검토를 통해서 우리는 샤비로의 범심론은 정당화될 수 없는 과도한 형이상학이라는 결론에 도달할 것이다.
Abstract
This paper critically examines the arguments for panpsychism developed by Steven Shaviro in his book, The Universe of Things. Shaviro's arguments are noteworthy in that they provide a metaphysical justification for some of the positions of speculative realism and new materialism. In support of panpsychism, Shaviro draws on Whitehead's metaphysics of organism, Wittgenstein's private sensation argument, and Galen Strawson's panpsychist argument. We will examine these in turn. First, a review of Whitehead's metaphysics of organism will reveal that not only does Whitehead's view differ from Shaviro's in that he takes anthropocentric correlationism as his starting point, but that Shaviro himself is not entirely free of anthropocentrism. Next, it will be pointed out that when Shaviro utilizes Wittgenstein's private sensation argument, he commits a performative contradiction. Finally, Strawson's attempt to defend panpsychism as the only reasonable physicalist position is unsuccessful because his argument is based on a problematic notion of emergence. This critical review leads us to the conclusion that Shaviro's panpsychism is an unjustifiable metaphysical surplus.
