Abstract

This article addresses the question of what cognitive element is in Aristotle's theory of emotion. Concerning this problem, two interpretations have been proposed: the imagination-based interpretation and the belief-based interpretation. In this article, the grounds and problems presented by these two interpretations are discussed one by one. In the first chapter, one version of the imagination-based interpretation, according to which emotion is based on the non-epistemic imagination in De Anima III. 3 is examined and its problems are pointed out. The next chapter discusses the two grounds that belief, not imagination, can be seen as the basis for emotion. In the next chapter, however, two difficulties of belief-based interpretation are pointed out: the existence of animal emotions and human emotions in abnormal situations. The next chapter discusses the interpretation suggested by Moss, according to which even all the human emotions can be explained on the basis of imagination rather than belief. The following chapter concludes the whole discussion by suggesting the possibility of a flexible and loose theory in which both imagination and belief contribute to the cognition in emotion, pointing out that attempting to reduce Aristotle's position to a single principle is bound to fail.
