본 연구는 서구 합리성에 대한 푸코의 비판이 가장 명확하게 드러나는 『말과 사물』을 분석하면서 근대 서구의 합리성을 비판하기만 할 뿐 그 자신은 한 번도 모습을 드러난 적 없었던 ‘푸코의 합리성’을 가시화한다. 『말과 사물』에서 푸코는 고전주의와 근대의 에피스테메를 구분하기 위해 벨라스케스의 시녀들을 참조하며 ‘왕의 자리’를 도입한다. 그런데 근대인의 시선에만 포착될 ‘왕의 자리’를 이용해 두 에피스테메를 설명한다는 사실로부터 우리는 ‘서구 근대’라는 푸코의 합리성을 확인할 수 있다. 이 점은 고고학이 근대적 질서에 속하는 ‘초월성’과 ‘역사’의 결합으로 작동한다는 점에서 다시 한번 확인된다. 그러나 서구 근대라는 한계는 동시에 푸코 사유의 조건이 되고, 이 조건으로부터 푸코는 근대의 사유 공간을 문제 삼는다. 그리고 고고학에게 주어진 가능성의 끝에서 우리는 자신의 한계로부터 출발하여 자신의 한계 위에 군림한 사드를 발견한다.
Abstract
This paper visualizes and criticizes Foucault's rationality, which criticizes the rationality of the modern West but has never been revealed himself. Foucault's criticism of Western rationality is most clearly shown in The Order of Things. In this book, Foucault introduces ‘the place of king’ to highlight the difference between epistemes. However, ‘the place of king’ conversely reveals Foucault's position as ‘Western modernity’, and archeology, a combination of transcendence and history, is also located within the thoughts of Western modernity. But at the same time, Western modernity as limit becomes a condition for Foucault’s thought, and from this condition, Foucault problematizes the modern thoughts. Finally Foucault’s archeology finds its possibility from Sade, who starts from his own limitations but reigns over them at last.
