본 논문은 『말과 사물』을 두고 스타이너와 푸코 사이에서 일어난 논쟁에서 출발해 푸코 고고학의 특징을 연구한다. 스타이너는 푸코의 고고학이 프로이트의 고고학의 영향 아래 있다고 주장했지만, 증상이라는 기호로부터 증상의 원인이되는 기원으로 거슬러 올라가는 프로이트의 고고학과 달리 푸코의 고고학은 서로대립하는 주장들과 상이한 분과학문들을 분석하면서 지식의 가능 조건을 탐구한다. 푸코의 말처럼, ’역사적 선험’을 탐구한다는 점에서 푸코의 고고학은 프로이트가 아닌 칸트와 연결된다. 그러나 칸트가 ’철학적 고고학’에서 역사적 선험을 인간 이성의 본성으로부터 탐구한다면, 푸코는 이를 반인간화·비본질화하고, 철저하게 역사화하면서 한 시대의 지식들로부터 고고학을 수행한다.
Abstract
This paper examines the features of Foucault’s archaeology, starting from the debate between Steiner and Foucault over Foucault’s archaeology. Steiner contends that Foucault’s archaeology is under the influence of Freud’s. However, whereas Freud’s archaeology traces the origins of the symptom from the signs to their causes, Foucault’s archaeology analyzes conflicting claims and different disciplines to investigate the conditions for possibility of knowledge. Foucault’s archaeology is linked to Kant’s in that it explores, in Foucault’s words, “historical a priori.” Nevertheless, Foucault takes a distinct approach from Kant. While Kant explores historical a priori from the nature of human reason in his “philosophical archaeology”, Foucault dehumanizes, de-naturalizes, and thoroughly historicizes it, conducting archaeology from the knowledge of an era.
