Factor Decomposition Analysis of Korean Water Transport Industry's Value Added Exports - Using International Input-output Tables -

This paper aims to analyze Korean water transport industry's value added exports (VAX) and decompose factors of change in Korean water transportation industry's VAX using the international input-output model. For this, we use the latest world input-output tables in the World Input-Output database released in 2016. The empirical results show that the major factor of change in Korean transport industry's VAX stems from cyclical factor (change in foreign final demand) until 2012 while, as it entered 2013, structural factor (change in value added coefficients and input structure) has greatly been affected the change of Korean water transport industry's VAX. Especially, VAX of Korean water transport has been heavily influenced by cyclical and structural factors in ROW (rest of the world) countries. We discuss meaningful implications for a Korean water transport policy. First, in order to exclude the double counting problem, policy makers need to use value added trade statistics. Second, it is necessary to establish policies that increase the direct value added ratio to greatly increase Korea water transport industry' VAX.
