A Study on the Export Competitiveness of Water Transport Industry in the World and Foreign Markets-Using Trade in Value Added Data-

The purpose of this study is to analyze the export competitiveness of Korean water transport industry in the world and foreign markets and present an overview of the export and import status of the Korean water transport industry in gross trade and trade in value added. The export competitiveness of Korean water transport industry was measured through the market share index (MSI), revealed comparative advantage (RCA), market comparative advantage (MCA), and trade specialization index (TSI). For empirical study, we use the latest world input-output tables in the World Input-Output Database released in 2016. The main implications of the empirical analysis are summarized as follows. First, in order to exclude the double counting problem, policy makers need to use trade statistics in value added terms. Second, the export competitiveness of Korea's water transport industry has generally been rising since 2012. It is necessary to establish policies with taking account of trade in value added data (TiVA) for improving the export competitiveness of Korean water transport industry.
