A Study on the Export Competitiveness of the Korean Automobile Industry in the World and Foreign Markets: Focus on Trade in Value Added

The purpose of this study is to analyze the export competitiveness of the Korean automobile industry in the world and foreign markets, and to present an overview of the export and import status of the Korean automobile industry in gross trade and trade in value added. The export competitiveness of the Korean automobile industry was measured through the market share index (MSI), revealed comparative advantage (RCA), market comparative advantage (MCA), and trade specialization index (TSI). For empirical study, we use the world input-output tables in the World Input-Output database released in 2016. The main implications of the empirical analysis are summarized as follows. First, to exclude the double counting problem, policy makers need to use trade in value added statistics. Second, the export competitiveness of Korea's automobile industry has generally been rising since 2000, but has been declining or stagnating since 2012. It is urgently necessary to establish policies for improving the export competitiveness of the Korean automobile industry.
