초록

Objective: This study examined the independent relationship between strength training participation and psychological resilience indicators, including stress, depression, and anxiety, among South Korean adults, using data from the 2022 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Methods: A representative sample of 4,855 adults aged 19 and above was included. Strength training was defined according to WHO guidelines (≥2 days/week). Psychological health was evaluated with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), a perceived stress measure, and the EQ-5D anxiety/depression scale. Complex sample logistic regressions were performed, adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic, and health behavior variables. Results: Adults who met the recommended strength training guideline showed significantly lower prevalence of high perceived stress (OR=0.77, 95% CI=0.62–0.95), depression risk (PHQ-9 ≥10; OR=0.72, 95% CI=0.56–0.94), and anxiety/depression (EQ-5D; OR=0.65, 95% CI=0.48–0.89) compared with those who did not. The associations remained after controlling for aerobic activity and other confounders. Conclusions: Regular participation in strength training is independently associated with reduced risks of stress, depression, and anxiety among Korean adults. These findings underscore the importance of promoting strength training, in addition to aerobic activity, to improve psychological resilience and public mental health, particularly in vulnerable populations.
