초록

This study examined the effects of electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) exercise on lower limb strength, sex hormones, and vascular function in elderly men. To achieve this, a pretest-posttest experimental design with a comparison group was applied. A total of 36 men aged 60 and older were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EMS exercise), a comparison group (weight training), and a control group (maintaining daily activities). The participants engaged in exercise three times per week for eight weeks, and changes were measured to derive the following conclusions. First, weight training had a more positive effect on lower limb strength in elderly men compared to EMS exercise. Second, weight training had a more positive effect on sex hormones in elderly men compared to EMS exercise. Third, EMS exercise had a more positive effect on vascular function in elderly men compared to weight training. In conclusion, while weight training is effective in improving lower limb strength and sex hormones in elderly men, EMS exercise has a more favorable impact on vascular function. Therefore, EMS exercise can be utilized as an exercise program for promoting physiological health in elderly men. In particular, it may serve as an alternative exercise method for frail elderly men who have difficulty performing resistance training.
