Abstract

Communication and Rhetoric: "Oxen in the Sun" in Ulysses Hee-sun Kim (Korea University) In Ulysses, Joyce presents the figures of Irish people suffering from English imperialism, corruptions of Catholicism represented by worldly, materialistic, power-oriented priests who try to preserve the glory of Irish past and violence, irrationalism, narrowmindedness and sentimentalism of Irish nationalist movement. Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom also live the frustrated lives in these Irish negative realities. Joyce reveals the Irish negative realities and presents their internal conflicts and how they overcome them in Ulysses. Joyce conducts many experiments on forms in not only revealing these Irish negative realities but presenting two main character's internal conflicts 커뮤니케이션과 문체and the process of their overcoming them. This article examines how Joyce effectively not only reveals his negative realities but presents two main characters suffering from their internal conflicts in the Irish negative realities and the process of their solving their internal conflicts by his experiments on forms. Joyce always wanted to escape from the negative situations of his country--the Irish political situation as a colony, Irish traditions and conventions represented by Catholicism, Irish history like nightmare and Irish nationalism. Also, by writing Ulysses in communicative, stylistic and linguistic experiments, Joyce tried to newly create multiple interpretations of his country's everyday history free from English imperialism, Irish catholicism and inconsistent Irish nationalism.
