Abstract
“the man in the Macintosh” in Ulysses: Rhetoric of Chance. The man in the macintosh is one of the mysterious characters in James Joyce’s Ulysses. Bloom, the protagonist of Ulysses, is anxious to know Macintosh’s identity and readers have tried to find out the most reliable answer up to now. However, it seems that his identity is never meant to be discovered. This paper aims to reveal that the man in the macintosh is the rhetoric of chance in life. His unexpected emergence in Hades is similar to the chance event whose cause is unknown. He is a cryptic figure, so many interpretations on his identity are natural among readers. There exist various different views on the man in the macintosh. No view on his identity is more privileged than the other views. Ulysses becomes a “writerly text” and opens to endless interpretation or rereading.
