Abstract
Writing the Traveling Self on the European Text: Olauda Equiano’s Interesting Narratives. Paying attention to Olaudah Equiano's intersection of autobiography and traveling writing, this paper explores its ethnographic and travel mode such as the voice of the enslaved native African assimilated by the Western culture, on the one hand, and the subversive voice of the diasporic outsider, on the other. Equiano's narrative voice is distinctive in that even his adult voice is not an appropriative, colonizing mode. In a complex narrative, he represents himself as en enlightened, progressive citizen as a desirable Other as Afro-British. The Narrative provokes new readings of those popular fiction writers like Aphra Behn, Swift, and Defoe. The discourse of travel imbedded in this narrative appears to be fractured and incongruous, putting Equiano into the position of imperial gaze and Western modes of knowing. Yet he adopts a politically dissident voice through the subversive voice of the Other destabilizing ideas about race, literacy, and morality.
