Abstract
The reception of Song of Arirang in the Chinese Korean(Joseonjok) community was significantly shaped by the particular historical context of the 1980s. Following the end of the Cultural Revolution, the Joseonjok community faced the imperative of reclaiming its diminished ethnic identity and cultural heritage while reaffirming its historical status within China. It was in this context that Song of Arirang emerged, featuring the compelling figure of Kim San, whose life narrative resonated with the needs of the Joseonjok community at the time. Coinciding with the publication of this work, Kim San, who had previously been executed under false accusations, was officially rehabilitated. Although Kim San was born on the Korean Peninsula, the majority of his activities took place in China, and both his execution and subsequent rehabilitation were carried out by the Chinese authorities. Furthermore, since his wife and son remained in China, his acceptance as a hero of the Joseonjok community was unproblematic. Unlike in Japan and South Korea, where the textual content of Song of Arirang was the primary focus, the Joseonjok community concentrated on the figure of Kim San himself, using the text as a medium to integrate him into their historical narrative. The community actively engaged in efforts to incorporate Kim San into the history of the Chinese Joseonjok. This study examines five key texts published within the Joseonjok community in China to analyze the process through which Kim San was incorporated into Joseonjok historical discourse.
