Abstract
This paper explores the way in which the monster comes to claim justice on behalf of those who are persecuted and oppressed in Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein. Published in 1818, Frankenstein has drawn attention from diverse areas of studies, ranging from post-Enlightenment ideas of species discourse and feminist approach to post-human figures of science fiction. In light of the relationship between creator and creature that he understands by reading John Milton’s Paradise Lost, Victor Frankenstein’s monster asks his creator to make a female companion, asserting his right to have her to communicate and share sympathy with. Yet Victor destroys the female monster on the final stage of completing the experiment unlike his first creation. Victor’s opposition to the monster’s request leads both of them to tragedy and reveals the scientist’s limits as a creator. However, it is the power of the language that the monster uses to convince the reader to justify his right to exist despite his hideous appearance. In this sense, the monster’s declaration of rights reflects his proposition to coexist with human beings as equal creatures, however hard it is.
