한국미술정보의 국제적 활용 방안 연구: 한국 서화가 정보 다국어 메타데이터 제공 사례를 중심으로

Abstract

With the growing global interest in Korean culture, international demand for enjoying Korean art is on the rise as well. However, there is still a paucity of information on Korean art in international databases such as the Getty Vocabularies. On the other hand, many of the materials related to Korean art that have been accumulated in South Korea remain primarily in Korean and are only being utilized within the country. Accordingly, as a means to help global users to better access information on Korean art, this paper proposes the creation of multilingual metadata and sharing it on international platforms. It introduces the case of the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage’s creation of multilingual metadata about Korean calligraphers and painters, drawn from the Dictionary of Korean Painters and Calligraphers through the Centuries, and its contribution to the Getty Vocabularies Database. It first discusses the characteristics of Getty Vocabularies, provides examples of its use on overseas platforms, and examines the projected effects of supplying metadata on Korean calligraphers and painters to the Getty Vocabularies Database. It further explores how this information on Korean calligraphers and painters is converted into multilingual metadata and integrated into the Getty Vocabularies Database and investigates the results of these efforts. Providing information about Korean calligraphers and painters to the Getty Vocabularies Database is one of the immediately available means to use utilize existing Korean art information on an international platform. However, it is necessary to establish and make use of South Korea’s own international digital archive platform for Korean art information. In response, this paper suggests the use of standard international formats, the building of a thesaurus, the application of standardized translation terms, the use of unique identifiers and control lists, and the provision of data in the Linked Open Data (LOD) format.
