Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to develop a standardized patient-based communication simulation program for nurses caring for aged patients and to evaluate its effectiveness with a focus on communication self-efficacy, communication barriers, and communication satisfaction. Methods: A randomized controlled pre-post design was conducted with 57 surgical ward nurses from a tertiary hospital in Seoul (experimental group=29; control group=28). The experimental group received a simulation program using standardized patients along with an educational booklet; the control group received only the booklet for four weeks of self-directed learning. Outcomes were measured using validated instruments (Cronbach’s ⍺=.71, .79, .73) and analyzed with paired t-tests, independent t-tests, and ANCOVA. Results: Communication satisfaction significantly improved in the experimental group compared to the control group (F=4.19, p=.045). Although both groups showed positive changes in communication self-efficacy and communication barriers, the between-group differences were not statistically significant (F=0.02, p=.877; F=2.19, p=.144). Conclusion: The program enhanced nurses’ communication satisfaction and demonstrated potential for improving communication with aged patients. It may be a practical and effective educational strategy for clinical settings.
